How fast does a Vespa go?

banner spiegel 728x90 en 1

A Vespa now comes in many shapes, colors and designs. However, the models can be easily classified into different speed classes. From 40 km/h to 120 km/h, everything is there, here are the most popular and best-known models listed with their data. A summarizing table can be found at the end of the article.

Vespa models and their speed classes

Everything has its beginning – Vespa 50cc Speed and Power

Vespa 50 N & Vespa 50 L (V5A1T)
These two models are technically very similar with only a few differences in design, the L has a double acting hydraulic shock absorber on the front wheel. Both engines have a displacement of 49.8 cc and a power of 1.5 hp at 4500 rpm. The top speed is 40 km/h and is therefore very popular with young people and novice riders.

Vespa 50 ET2 (ZAPC 16)
The new 50 ET2 comes in two versions, one with carburetor, the other with fuel injection. However, both have the same engine with a displacement of 49.3 cc and a power of 4.5 hp at 6500 rpm. Nevertheless, the top speed is still 40 km/h as usual.

Vespa 50 S (V5SA1T)
This model was intended only for export and has a bench seat for two people. Again, it has a displacement of 49.8 cc, but a power of 2.5 hp at 5800 rpm. This allows it to reach a top speed of 60 km/h. Especially in Germany, the 50 S was a great success.

Vespa 50 Super Sprint (V5SS1T)
This Vespa is also made for the export market and has two seats. The engine has a displacement of 49.8 cc and a power of 3.7 hp at 7000 rpm. Here the Vespa makes it to a top speed of 70 km/h and is still a special rarity today.

Vespa 50 PK – PK/S (V5X1T – V5X2T)
The PK is the basic model, the PK/S the luxury version with turn signals and luggage rack behind the bulkhead. Both are technically equipped in the same way with a displacement of 49.79 cc and a power of 1.5 hp at 4500 rpm. The maximum speed is 40 km/h.

Vespa 50 PK N (V5X5T)
This new version has important innovations: Starter button on the handlebar, better operable switches, seat with non-slip cover and electric starter. The engine has a displacement of 49.8 cc and a new power of 2.2 hp at 5000 rpm. The speed remains at 40 km/h.

Vespa 50 R (V5A1T)
The R version of the 50 is the most economical model in the range. With a displacement of 49.7 cc and a power of only 1.5 hp at 4500 rpm, the scooter runs a top speed of 40 km/h. This Rolelr was at the top of the wish list of young people at the time.

Vespa 50 Elestart (V5A3T + V5B2T)
Although the kickstarter was easy to use on the 50, Piaggio launched a version with electric starter. The engine remained the same with a displacement of 49.7 cc, a power of 1.5 hp at 4500 rpm and a top speed of 40 km/h. The Ele was far ahead of its time with the electric starter, but this model found mainly female customers.

Vespa 50 ET4 (ZAPC 384)
To meet the increasingly stringent emission standards, Piaggio presents this four-stroke 50cc machine. The engine has a displacement of 49.9 cc, although the power is not known exactly official. The top speed remains steady at 40 km/h.

Vespa 50 LX 2T (ZAPC 3810)
The LX is a further development of the ET, especially in terms of appearance. The two-stroke engine has a displacement of 49.4 cc, again the power is not officially noted. The speed is 40 km/h as usual.

Vespa 50 LXV (ZAPC 38300)
On the basis of the smallest LX model, this variant is created, which stylistically intentionally follows the look of the sixties. The engine is the same with a displacement of 49.4 cc and a top speed of 40 km/h.

Vespa Elettrica 45
The Piaggio company of course always moves with the times and there is no getting around an electric drive these days. The engine has a power of 3.5 kW (4.8 hp) at 5500 rpm and a peak power of 4 kW. This gives the electric scooter a top speed of 40 km/h.

Vespa 50 Primavera
The Primavera represents a huge leap forward in terms of features and quality. The engine has a displacement of 49.9 cc and a power of 4.4 hp at 6500 rpm. It manages to reach a top speed of 40 km/h with much lower consumption than its predecessors.

Vespa 50 Sprint
As an adequate alternative to the Primavera 50, the Sprint is intended for those who want to look a little more sophisticated and are looking for even better road holding. The engine is no different with a displacement of 49.9 cc, a power of 4.4 hp at 6500 rpm and a top speed of 40 km/h. However, the wheels have been changed to 12 inches, which provides much more safety.

Vespa 90cc Speed and Power

Vespa 90 (V9A1T)
The 90 is externally practically identical to the 50 and differs only in the engine. The displacement is 88.5 cc and it has a power of 7.2 hp at 5250 rpm. This gives the Vespa 90 a top speed of 80 km/h.

Vespa 90 Super Sprint (V9SS1T)
The body is built extra narrow to look sportier and also reduce drag. The model has a displacement of 88.5 cc and a power of 6 hp at 6000 rpm. However, with a top speed of 93 km/h, the promise of the name is not quite fulfilled.

The new model also has a displacement of 124.79 cc, but a power of 4.5 hp at 4500 rpm. However, this does not change the top speed of 70 km/h.

Vespa 125 Sport
For the sport version, not only the design, but also the technology was changed quite a bit. With a displacement of 124.2 cc, it has a whopping 7 hp at 6750 rpm. With this, it makes it to a top speed of 95 km/h.

Vespa 125 (V1T)
While the Vespa 98 sold only modestly, the 1948 Vespa 125 actually triggered the later Vespa boom. Its engine has a displacement of 124.79 cc and an output of 4 hp at 4500 rpm. This gives it a top speed of 70 km/h.

Vespa 125 (VNA1T + VNA2T)
The 125 of the new vintage has the headlight characteristically positioned on the handlebars. The engine now has a displacement of 123.7 cc with a power of 4.5 hp at 5000 rpm. This makes the new edition of the classic to a top speed of 75 km / h.

Vespa 150cc Speed and Power

Vespa 150 (VL1T + VL2T + VL3T)
Piaggio introduces this model with increased top speed mainly to allow the Vespa to enter the Autostrada at that time. The displacement is 145.6 cc and the power counts 5.5 hp at 5000 rpm. The desired top speed of 80 km/h could thus be achieved.

Vespa 150 PX
The 150 also continued to have high demand and so it saw a resurgence with a Euro 3 compliant engine. The engine has a displacement of 149 cc and a power of 7.9 hp at 6000 rpm. With a top speed of 95 km/h, it allows the classic to return to the roads revitalized.

The 150 Gran Lusso is aimed at a particularly demanding clientele with a lot of chrome jewelry. The displacement is 145.5 cc and the model has a power of 6 hp at 5000 rpm. The top speed of 90 km/h has made it a very attractive offer for professionals at the time.

Vespa 150 Sprint (VLB1T + VLB2T)
This beautiful 150 replaced the GL and is characterized by quite fast performance. The engine also has a displacement of 145.5 cc, but a power of 7.7 hp at 5000 rpm. With this, the 150 Sprint makes it to a top speed of 95 km/h.

Vespa 150 PX (VLX1T)
This model is the most balanced of the range, its engine is more powerful and elastic than that of the 125, with a displacement of 149.56 cc and a power of 8.8 hp at 5600 rpm. With its top speed of 100 km/h, it becomes a complete success.

Vespa 150 Cosa (VLR1T)
Visually, the Cosa series is kept the same and therefore does not achieve the desired sales figures. The displacement is 149 cc and the power is 9 hp at 6000 rpm. The top speed is 92 km/h, just above the sister model.

Vespa 150 ET4 (ZAPM 1900)
Despite the classic displacement, the engine of this model is a real new development: it uses an engine of the LEADER family (Low Emission Advanced Engine Range). The values are nothing special with a displacement of 149.5 cc and a power of 12.5 hp at 7500 rpm. The top speed is 97 km/h, only here much less emissions are put into the environment.

Vespa 150 S / ie
The technical specifications have been taken from the LX series and given a chic design. The engine has a displacement of 151 cc and a power of 12.1 hp at 8000 rpm. The top speed is 96 km/h, making it a chic runabout.

Vespa 160cc Speed and Power

Vespa 180cc Speed and Power

Vespa 180 Super Sport (VSC1T)
As the successor to the rather unloved 160 GS, Piaggio presented the 180 SS with better performance. With a displacement of 181.1 cc, the engine manages to produce 10 hp at 6250 rpm. This gives it a top speed of 105 km/h and makes it the fastest scooter of its time.

Vespa 180 Rally (VSD1T)
The Rally replaces the 180 Super Sport in the model range after 4 years and undergoes improvements to the engine and bodywork. The displacement is 180.7 cc and the engine has a power of 10 hp at 5700 rpm. The top speed remains 105 km/h.

The outstanding engine has a displacement of 197.97 cc and a powerful output of 12.5 hp at 5700 rpm. With a top speed of 116 km/h, the model is heavily advertised in the brochure.

1976 vespa rally 200

Vespa 200 PE / PX (VSX1T)
Except for the displacement, this model is the same as its PX sisters 125 & 150. The differences are minor and are limited to standard electronic ignition and spare wheel. Displacement is 197.97 cc and power is 12 hp at 5600 rpm. Thus, the model manages a top speed of 110 km / h.

Vespa 200 Cosa (VSR1T)
Despite its impeccable engineering, it too does not find much approval in the market. Its top engine has a displacement of 198 cc and a power of 11 hp at 6000 rpm. Even the top speed of 100 km/h can no longer convince customers to buy it.

Vespa 200 GTL (ZAPM 312)
The 200 version of the Granturismo has a much better performance than the 125. With a displacement of 198 cc and a power of 21 hp at 8500 rpm, the Vespa was the most powerful ever. Acceleration is excellent and the top speed of 120 km/h is also absolutely convincing.

Vespa 250 cc Speed and Power

Vespa 250 GTS ie / GTV (ZAPM 451)
The engine of this Vespa is completely new and belongs to the Quasar family with four valves and water cooling. The displacement is 244 cc and it manages a power of 22 hp at 8250 rpm. The top speed of 122 km/h also surpasses its GTL predecessor and knocks it out of first place.

Vespa 300cc Speed and Power

Vespa 300 GTS
Never in the history of Vespa there was a model in this displacement class, now there are unprecedented performance values, which provides great fun both in the city and on the highway. The monster has a displacement of 278 cc and a power of 23.8 hp at 8250 rpm. This takes it to a new level with a top speed of 125 km/h.

Vespa 300 GTV
For the very fast driving fun Vespa has now a completely new runabout at the start with a single-cylinder HPE engine (High Performance Engine). This has a displacement of 278 cc and a powerful output of 23.8 hp at 8250 rpm. This makes it a whopping 120 km/h and makes it the most powerful Vespa currently on the market.

For long driving pleasure

Like all vehicles, the Vespa needs a little love and affection now and then, so that the crate runs as long and as well as possible. It is better to take precautions and care for it instead of expensive repairs afterwards. A trip to the workshop for inspection never hurts and also for home care there are some articles for care and maintenance for Vespa and scooter.

And should the desire for individualization exist, there are also many possibilities to perform tuning for all models. What legal aspects must be considered can be read in our article “Vespa tuning – what is possible and what is legal?

Good to know

Which Vespa is the strongest?

Currently, the Vespa 300 GTV is the most powerful on the market and sets quite a high level of driving fun with 278cc displacement and 23.8hp power. This requires a motorcycle license, it can not be driven with the simple car license.

How can you make a Vespa go faster?

A Vespa can be throttled relatively easily and may also be tuned within the scope of the law. However, special approvals are often necessary for this, which must first be agreed with the TÜV.

  1. Here’s hoping you can help. I’m trying to find the standard factory acceleration time of a 2019 vespa piaggio 50 cc . ideally 0-30 mph. Google just kept me going in circles. Cheers, Tony
