Purist, on the other hand, was the solution to the question of storage space – the first Vespa didn’t have any either. Instead, there was an easy-to-mount luggage rack as an accessory.
Vespa 946, a masterpiece of the Italian manufacturer Piaggio, was sold in 2013 in a limited edition of 3600 vehicles in white and black colors at a price of 9000 euros. It was nicknamed “Ricordo Italiano” and 300 copies were destined for the German market and 200 for the Austrian market. Every year there was to be a new edition of the Vespa 946, which would be distinguished from the previous year’s models by its color and an engraved byname on the metal cover under the saddle. In addition, special models were also released with slightly different equipment, such as a shortened saddle, but expandable for a passenger, and a luggage rack.
Limited to 1,000 copies, this numbered version of the Vespa 946 is all about ringing in the lunar calendar of the Year of the Rabbit. Manufacturer Piaggio is therefore launching a Vespa 946 project that will last for the next 12 years. Each subsequent limited edition watch is inspired by the lunar zodiac of that year. Many Western cultures have been in the year 2023 since January 1 because of the Gregorian calendar, but most Asian clocks tick a little differently because they follow the so-called lunar calendar. In countries like China, Indonesia, Korea and Vietnam, New Year’s Day is traditionally celebrated according to this calendar and falls on January 22. The rabbit itself is considered intelligent, calm, cautious and patient, but it is also said to have haughty, pessimistic and reserved characteristics.
Popular collector’s item
The Vespa 946, with its peculiarities, has become a sought-after collector’s item in recent years and is now produced in a special area in Pontedera, which is more reminiscent of a studio than an industrial production facility. This area is entirely dedicated to the production of this particular model, thus guaranteeing high quality and precision in production.
The Vespa 946 10° Anniversario is now equally the epitome of elegance and sophistication, thanks to its numerous exquisite details. From the split aluminum alloy rims, whose rim flanges perfectly match the velvety green of the bodywork and have a warm burnished finish, to the fine fins around the wheel hub that pay homage to the historic drum brakes of the first Vespa models. The burnished topstitching on the black cover of the seat and the handles hand-stitched with needle and thread also contribute to the noble appearance.
But what catches your eye directly is the playful painting on the front and back of the sheet metal. In the spirit of the “Year of the Rabbit”, a cute bunny shows up in black-orange-white. White and orange rays are also distributed on the rest of the surface, rounding off the whole look and making the Vespa a special unique selling point.
